I'm getting really low FPS in Minecraft. How do I allocate more memory towards it?

I've heard that it makes it run smoother. I've tried to increase the allocated memory and it didn't work... How do I get it to work? Also, my laptop has 3 gigs of RAM. How much memory should I allocate to it?
