What do I need to consider when backpacking?

I am planning on going backpacking with a friend in about five months, and I really don't want to forget about something important I need to pack. I am planning on heading from Gig Harbor, WA down to about Barstow, CA, and heading East to Little Rock, AK. Most of this will be on foot, but we will likely take a few buses here and there.
