Cant upload music to iPod?!?

Whenever i try to sync my 80 gig iPod classic it will upload up to 3 gigs than it will stop at one song and take forever to sync and if i don't unplug it when that happens it will erase the ipod and make it unusable until i do a full restore on it. does anybody have any idea how to fix this?
